Kills 99.99% of germs…but what does this really mean?

Hand washes and cleaning products often claim to kill 99.9% or 99.99% of germs – we see it all the time – but what does it really mean? Is there any difference between the two?

Actually, there is. The ingredients in toiletries and cleaning products are tested in laboratory conditions against common bacteria and viruses.1,2 Ingredients are applied to test areas containing a known quantity of microorganisms and their ‘killing power’ is recorded.
